Question: Are two kittens better than one? Should I get a pair of kittens?
Answer: We often are asked if one or two kittens are best to purchase. If you already have other pets, yes: the more the merrier! But if you have no other pets in the home, or spend part of the day away where there is no one at home with your kitty, then it is a great idea. Here are a few of the reasons a second furry companion is a good choice:
- Cats need stimulation during the day just like humans. A four legged friend is perfect for playtime when their humans are away from home.
- By having two (or more) kitties, you are able to enjoy the true social nature of cats and their relationship with each other.
- Cats that have a playmate tend to be more socially well-adjusted and more easily handle new situations.
- They are less likely to get into mischief out of boredom when they have a playmate with whom to spend some time.
- Studies have shown that some animals left alone most of the day in the house have brains that weigh up to 25% less than those who have playmates. This is because they are less active and can become bored by spending many hours alone.
- If they have companions, cats are much less likely to gain weight due to lack of movement and to suffer related illnesses.
- Your cat will remain more playful and youthful into his or her later years with a four legged companion to interact with.
Question: Aren’t two cats twice the work?
Answer: The workload to care for two cats remains pretty much the same. Fill the food bowl, change the water, scoop the litter once or twice a day... Get twice the purrs and snuggles! Twice the enjoyment and entertainment. You don’t need more space for a second cat anywhere else- but in your heart!
Question: If I do get two cats, should it be a girl and a boy or two of the same gender?
Answer: Either male or female are fine choices. Your kittens are spayed or neutered so gender does not really matter.
Popular belief is that girl kitties seem to stay “kittenish” a little longer, and boys seem to become little “couch potatoes” a little sooner, in some cases, anyway! <G> But they have their own individual personalities so this is not always the case. Also it has been found that sometimes a girl kitty may become more attached to a male in the home ( wrapping them around their little furry paws!) while a male kitty often may become more attached to the lady of the house, ( especially if she is the one delivering canned food goodies and snacks most often!) This is often the case if there are no kids in the house but each kitten is different and they will love every family member very much! Each individual kitty may pick a favorite human to nap with or sleep with at night, too. It all depends on their unique personalities.
A litter mate ( boy or girl) is also great as a second kitty because they are already pals- familiar with one another and are playmates. You can also choose to get a retired adult or a kitty from another litter which is close in age to your new kitten. If there is a little age difference in your two kitties from different litters or catteries, that is OK too, as the older kitty usually quickly adopts the new “baby” in the home as his or her little sister or brother .
The most important thing is for you to pick a second kitten that you love, and she or he will love you in return! That way, your second kitty pal will be a wonderful companion to you, your family and your other kitten too!
